What Are Veneers and How Long Do They Last?
Do you look at people with perfect smiles and wonder how they achieved them? All of these celebrities gorgeous white smiles, with teeth that are perfectly straight- what’s their secret? For many of them, the secret is veneers.
What are veneers? Thin shells custom-fit for your teeth, they instantly improve the look of your smile, whether your teeth are chipped, discolored, or overlapping. Veneers were first invented in 1928, as a way to conceal a movie star’s imperfections for the length of a scene. They weren’t made to last, and could be removed at any time. Fast forward to the 1980s and the invention of dental etching, and an adhesive strong enough to hold veneers on for years, and the idea of permanent veneers was born.
Modern veneers are much more technologically advanced, typically made of composite resin or porcelain. Your dentist can create veneers that look and feel just like your teeth, in the perfect shape, color, and size, so it will fit in seamlessly with the surrounding teeth. They can cover chips and cracks in the natural teeth, fix stained teeth that resist whitening treatments, and even fill in gaps and spaces between your teeth. Sometimes, veneers can be used to improve the look of slightly crooked or misaligned teeth so that you won’t need to fix them with braces.
How long do veneers last? In some cases, temporary veneers are still used for emergencies. However, permanent veneers can last as long as 10 or even 15 years if they’re properly maintained. Even if a veneer cracks or loosens, it can be repaired. How long does it take to have these veneers custom-created for your mouth? Traditionally, porcelain veneers required several appointments. At Beyond Dentistry, though, we use computer-aided technology to create veneers with the perfect fit, function and look in just two visits.
