What Is a Dental Emergency
What is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency! This can be the worst! When you are suffering from a dental emergency it is extremely important to be seen by your dentist as soon as possible. But what constitutes a dental emergency? Here are some examples of true dental emergencies.
- Extreme Tooth, Gum, or Jaw Pain
This type of extreme pain can mean something much worse than what you see on the surface. Extreme pain in any part of the mouth could mean an abscess, an infected tooth, or worse. - A Broken or Chipped Tooth
When a tooth is broken or chipped due to injury, it can lead to infection and the spread of infection to other parts of the body if not treated promptly. Therefore, a broken or chipped tooth should be considered a dental emergency that requires immediate attention. - A Missing Implant
An implant is more likely to fall out of the mouth than the original tooth. If one of your implants falls out of the mouth, it is time to see the dentist, immediately. Left untreated, a missing restoration can alter the bite as well as the positioning of the other teeth. - A Missing Filling or Crown
Losing a filling or a crown can expose the tooth to bacteria and this can lead to infection of the tooth. It is important to get the filling or crown replaced immediately. - Abscess or Severe Swelling
An abscess is a severe infection in the mouth. A severe swelling could be a sign of an abscess or another problem. These are both reasons to be seen by a dentist as soon as possible. - Foreign Object Lodged in Mouth or Tooth
How on earth could this happen? You’d be surprised. It’s actually quite easy for food to get lodged between the teeth. Particularly if the teeth aren’t aligned properly, sometimes it’s even hard to fit a piece of floss between the teeth and when food gets lodged in the teeth, it’s got to come out. Call the dentist. You may need emergency dental care. - Soft Tissue Injury
If soft tissue damage has occurred, no matter what the cause, it’s important to call this an emergency. Depending on the severity of the damage, you may be able to wait a day, but if the injury is acute, please see a dental practitioner right away. - A Loose Tooth or Lost Tooth Due to Injury
A tooth that has been knocked loose or knocked out is most definitely an emergency.
